Traveling to Poland
A short history of Olsztyn

Founding & Medieval Period: Olsztyn (German: Allenstein) was founded in 1353 by the Teutonic Knights, who built a castle to secure their rule over the Warmia region. The Gothic Olsztyn Castle remains one of the city’s landmarks.
Polish–Prussian Heritage: Over the centuries, Olsztyn shifted between Polish, Prussian, and German rule. After the First Partition of Poland (1772), it became part of Prussia, and later the German Empire.
20th Century: In 1945, it was incorporated into Poland and rebuilt, with its Old Town carefully restored.

Copernicus Era: The famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus lived and worked in Olsztyn between 1516–1521 as administrator of the Warmia Chapter’s estates. In the castle, he drew his famous astronomical table on a wall, which is still visible today.
Today: Olsztyn is the capital of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, known as the “Land of a Thousand Lakes.”
Olsztyn combines a rich historical heritage with natural beauty, offering visitors Gothic monuments, charming Old Town streets, and access to forests and lakes right at the city’s edge.
